When you are looking for debt help, it’s important to consider all your options but it can be confusing with so many organizations promising to get you debt free. There are a few important things you should know.
- We have been providing caring and compassionate debt help service to those in need for over 50 years.
- We are a local firm committed to providing personalized, face-to-face service. You will never deal with a call centre and you will never be just a number at Vine and Williams.
- There is a difference between a Licensed Insolvency Trustee at Vine and Williams and a Debt Settlement Company. By law a Licensed Insolvency Trustee is the only one who can provide debt help with full protection from your creditors when you file either a consumer proposal or a bankruptcy. Debt Settlement Companies do not have any power to protect you and enforce a settlement on all of your creditors or stop all collection actions.
The Differences between Licensed Trustee & Debt Settlement Company
|Licensed Trustee||Debt Settlement Company|
|A trustee is licensed by the Canadian government and must follow a strict code of ethics.||May avoid regulation by partnering with a law firm exempt from new debt settlement laws in Ontario.|
|Required by law to discuss all your options for debt relief.||Will likely recommend only their debt settlement option.|
|Has the full power of the law to protect you and demand that creditors stop all collection actions.||Does not have any legal authority to stop any collection actions.|
|Fees are limited by legislation.||Set their own fees and may charge large upfront fees before doing anything for you.|
|Must meet in person to complete assessment.||Often deal with you by phone and email without ever meeting you.|
- There are reputable not-for-profit credit counsellors who may be able to assist you with a debt management plan. These charitable organizations will meet with you in person and do not charge large up-front fees. See our Helpful Links for the not-for-profit agencies we work with.
